Deborah's Song - Judges 5

So on that day Deborah and Baraq son of Abino'am sang, saying:

3. Listen, you kings! Give ear, you leaders!
I to Yahweh, I, I will sing,
making music of praise to Yahweh, God of Yisra'el.
shime‘û melâkîym ha’azîynû rôzenîym
’ânôkîy laYHVH ’ânôkîy ’âshîyrâh
’âzammêr laYHVH ’elôhêy yisrâ’êl
4. Yahweh! At your setting out from Seir,
At your marching from the open fields of Edom,
the land quaked, yes, the skies dripped
yes, the clouds dripped water.
YHVH betsê’thekâ missê‘îyr
betsa‘dekâ missedêh ’edôm
’erets râ‘âshâh gam-shâmayim nâtâphû
gam-‘âbîym nâtephû mâyim
5. The mountains melted before the face of Yahweh -
He of Sinai - before the face of Yahweh, God of Yisra'el!

6. In the days of Shamgar son of ‘Anath,
in the days of Ya'el, deserted were the paths
and travellers on roads travelled paths all round about.

7. Deserted the villages in Yisra'el, deserted
until I rose up, Deborah,
I rose up a mother in Yisra'el.

8. The choosing of God is new:
then strife at the city gates
with shield - if seen - or spear
among forty thousand in Yisra'el.

9. My heart is for the lawgivers of Yisra'el,
for the volunteers among the people - bless Yahweh!
libîy lechôwqeqêy yisrâ’êl
hammithnadebîym bâ‘âm bârekû YHVH
10. Riders on tawny donkeys -
dwellers among cloth drapes -
travellers on the way - ponder this!
rôkebêy ’athônôwth tsechôrôwth
yôshebêy ‘al-midîyn
wehôlekhêy ‘al-derekh sîychû
11. From darting voices around the watering-places -
where they recount the righteous acts of Yahweh,
righteous acts among his villages in Yisra'el -
then down to the city gates go the people of Yahweh!

shâm yethannû tsideqôwth YHVH
tsideqôth pirezôwnôw beyisrâ’êl
’âz yâredû lashshe‘ârîym ‘am-YHVH
12. Arise, arise Deborah!
Arise, arise, tell this in song!
Rise up, Baraq and capture your captives, son of Abinoam.
‘ûrîy ‘ûrîy debôwrâh
‘ûrîy ‘ûrîy daberîy-shîyr
qûm bârâq ûshabêh shebyekhâ ben-’abîynô‘am
13. Then down went the remnant to join the renowned of the people,
Yahweh came down to me amidst the mighty.
’âz yerad sârîyd le’adîyrîym ‘âm
YHVH yerad-lîy baggibôwrîym
14. Some of Ephrayim, rooted in Amaleq:
“After you, Binyamin amidst your people!”
Some of Makir came down, officers,
and from Zebulun leaders with the mustering staff.
minnîy ’ephrayim shârshâm ba‘amâlêq
’achareykhâ binyâmîyn ba‘amâmeykhâ
minnîy makhîyr yaredû mechôqeqîym
ûmizzebûlun môshekîym beshêbet çôphêr
15. and the chiefs in Yissakhar were with Deborah -
yes, Yissakhar was with Baraq,
into the deep place they hurried at his feet.

16. Why did you rest among your encampments,
listening to the piping to the flocks?
For the divisions of Re’uben there were great heart-searchings.

lishemôah sheriqôwth ‘adârîym
liphlaggôwth re’ûbên gedôwlîym chiqerêy-lêb
17. Gilead beyond the Yorden was settled,
and Dan - why turn aside and be at ease?
Asher rested in his haven many days
and at his landing-places was settling.
gile‘âd be‘êber hayyarden shâkhên
wedân lâmmâh yagûr ’ânîyyôwth
’âshêr yâshab lechôwph yammîym
we‘al miphrâtsâyw yishkôwn
18. Zebulun's people tested themselves to the point of death,
and Naphtali on the high fields.
zebulûn ‘am chêrêph napshôw lâmûth
wenaphtâlîy ‘al merôwmêy sâdeh
19. Came kings and battled
then battled kings of Canaan
by Taanach at the water of Megiddo -
but plunder and silver they did not take.
bâ’û melâkhîym nilchâmû
’âz nilchamû malekêy kena‘an
beta‘anakh ‘al-mêy megiddôw
betsa‘ keçeph lô’ lâqâchû
20. From the skies they battled -
the stars from their paths battled with Sisera -
min-shâmayim nilchâmû
hakkôwkhâbîym mimmeçillôwthâm nilechamû ‘im-çîyçerâ’
21. River Qishon swept them away,
River of Ages, River Qishon.
“Stride out, my soul, in strength.”

nachal qedûmîym nachal qîyshôwn
tidrekhîy napheshîy ‘ôz
22. Then was hammering of hooves of the horse,
overwhelming rushing of the valiant.
’âz hâlemû ‘iqqebêy çûç
middaharôwth daharôwth ’abîyrâyw
23. Curse Meroz, said the messenger of Yahweh,
curse thoroughly those living there -
for they did not come to the help of Yahweh,
to help Yahweh among the mighty.
’ôwrû mêrôz ’âmar male’akh YHVH
’ôrû ’arôwr yôshbeythâ
kîy lô’-bâ’û le‘ezerath YHVH
le‘ezerath YHVH baggibôwrîym
24. Surely blessed among women is Ya'el,
wife of Cheber the Qeynite -
among women in tents she is surely blessed.
tebôrakh minnâshîym yâ‘êl
’êsheth cheber haqqêynîy
minnâshîym bâ’ôhel tebôrâkh
25. Water he asked, milk she gave
in a bowl for the renowned she brought curdled milk.
mayim shâ’al châlâb nâthânâh
beçêphel ’addîyrîym hiqrîybâh cheme’âh
26. Her hand to the stake went out,
her right hand to the hammer of workmen.
She hammered Sisera, she crushed his head,
she smote and pierced his temple.
yâdâh layyâthêd tishlachnâh
wîymîynâh lehalemûth ‘amêlîym
wehalemâh çîyçerâ’ mâchaqâh rô’shôw
ûmâchatsâh wechâlephâh raqqâthôw
27. Between her legs he bowed, he fell, he lay
between her legs he bowed, he fell:
in the place where he bowed, there he fell - destroyed.
bêyn ragleyhâ kâra‘ nâphal shâkhab
bêyn ragleyhâ kâra‘ nâphal
ba’asher kâra‘ shâm nâphal shâdûd
28. Up at the window she leans and calls out -
the mother of Sisera at the lattice:
“why the delay for his chariot to come?
why the wait for the clatter of his chariots?”
be‘ad hachallôwn nishqephâh watyabbêb
’êm çîyçerâ’ be‘ad hâ’eshnâb
maddûa‘ bôshêsh rikhebôw lâbô’
maddûa‘ ’echerû pa‘amêy markebôwthâyw
29. The wisest of her ladies spoke out -
indeed she repeats her words to her -
chakhemôwth sârôwtheyhâ ta‘aneynnâh
’aph-hîy’ tâshîyb ’amâreyhâ lâh
30. “Are they not taking and sharing the plunder -
a girl - a pair of girls - for the head of a fighter.
Plunder! Dyed clothing for Sisera!
Plunder! Dyed clothing with embroidery!
Dyed cloth with elaborate embroidery on his neck as plunder.”
halô’ yimtse’û yechalleqû shâlâl
racham rachamâthayim lerô’sh geber
shelal tsebâ‘îym leçîyçerâ’
shelal tsebâ‘îym riqmâh
tseba‘ riqmathayim letsawû’rêy shâlâl
31. Even so may perish all your enemies, Yahweh
and may those who love you appear like the sun in its might!
kên yô’bedû kol-’ôwyebeykhâ YHVH
we’ôhabâyw ketsê’th hashshemesh bigeburâthôw

Then peace in the land forty years.
