Genesis 3:1-24

1. Now the serpent was most crafty among all the living things of the open country which Yahweh Elohim had made, and he said to the woman, “Now, since Elohim said, ‘Never eat from any tree in the garden’...” wehannâchâsh hâyâh ‘ârûm mikkôl chayyath hassâdeh ’asher ‘âsâh YHVH ’elôhîym wayyô’mer ’el-hâ’ishshâh ’aph kîy-’âmar ’elôhîym lô’ thô’khelû mikkôl ‘êts haggân
2. but the woman replied to the serpent, “From the fruits of the trees of the garden we do eat, wattô’mer hâ’ishshâh ’el-hannâchâsh mipperîy ‘êts-haggân nô’khêl
3. but of the fruits of the tree which is in the middle of the garden Elohim said, ‘Never eat from them and never reach into it, lest you die’” ûmipperîy hâ‘êts ’asher bethôwkh-haggân ’âmar ’elôhîym lô’ thô’khelû mimmennû welô’ thigge‘û bôw pen-temuthûn
4. Then the serpent said to the woman, “You shall not certainly die, wayyô’mer hannâchâsh ’el-hâ’ishshâh lô’-môwth temuthûn
5. for Elohim knows that in the day you both eat of it, then your eyes will be opened and you will both be like Elohim, knowers of good and evil’.” kîy yôdêa‘ ’elôhîym kîy beyôwm ’akhâlekhem mimmennû wenipqechû ‘êynêykhem wiheyîythem kê’lôhîym yôde‘êy tôwb wârâ‘
6. Then the woman saw how good the tree was for food, and how attractive to the eyes and desirable the tree was for giving insight, and she took some of its fruit and she ate and gave some to the man who was with her. And he ate. wattêre’ hâ’ishshâh kîy tôwb hâ‘êts lema’akhâl wekhîy tha’avâh-hû’ lâ‘êynayim wenechemâd hâ‘êts lehasekîyl wattiqqach mippireyôw wattô’khal wattittên gam-le’îyshâh ‘immâh wayyô’khal
7. So the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew themselves to be nakedly exposed, so they sewed together leaves of fig trees and made for themselves loin-cloths. wattippâqachenâh ‘ênêy shenêyhem wayyêde‘û kîy ‘êyrummim hêm wayyithperû ‘alêh the’ênâh wayya‘asû lâhem chagôrôth
8. Then they heard the voice of Yahweh Elohim going to and fro in the garden in the breath of the day, and they hid themselves, the man and his woman, away from the face of Yahweh Elohim in amongst the trees of the garden, wayyishme‘û ’eth-qôwl YHVH ’elôhîym mithhallêkh baggân lerûach hayyôwm wayyithchabbê’ hâ’âdâm we’ishetôw mippenêy YHVH ’elôhîym bethôwkh ‘êts haggân
9. but Yahweh Elohim called out to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”, wayyiqerâ’ YHVH ’elôhîym ’el-hâ’âdâm wayyô’mer lôw ’ayyekkâh
10. and he replied, “Your voice I heard in the garden, and I was afraid because a naked man am I, so I hid myself.” vayyô’mer ’eth-qôlekhâ shâma‘etîy baggân wâ’îyrâ’ kîy-‘êyrôm ’ânôkhîy wâ’êchâbê’
11. Then he said, “Who made you aware that you were naked? From the tree - concerning which I commanded you not to eat from it - have you eaten?”, vayyô’mer mîy higgîyd lekhâ kîy ‘êyrôm ’âttâh hamin hâ‘êts ’asher tsiwwîythîykhâ lebiletîy ’akhâl-mimmennû ’âkhâle
12. and the man replied, “The woman who you gave to be with me: it was her who gave to me from the tree, and I ate.” vayyô’mer hâ’dâm hâ’ishshâh ’asher nâthattâh ‘immâdîy hiw’ nâthenâh-lîy min-hâ‘êts wâ’ôkhêl
13. Next Yahweh Elohim said to the woman, “What is this thing you have done?”, and the woman said, “The serpent led me astray, and I ate” vayyô’mer YHVH ’elôhîym lâ’ishshâh mah-zzô’th ‘âsîyth wattô’mer hâ’ishshâh hannâchâsh hishshîy’anîy wâ’ôkhêl
14. Then Yahweh Elohim said to the serpent
“Because you did this,
cursed are you among all domesticated animals
and among all creatures of the open country.
Upon your belly you will go,
and dust you will eat all the days of your life.
wayyômer YHVH ’elôhîym ’el-hannâchâsh
kîy ‘âsîythâ zô’th
’ârûr ’attâh mikol-habbehêmâh
ûmikôl chayyath hassâdeh
‘al-gechônekhâ têlêkh
we‘âphâr tôkal kol-yemêy hayyeykhâ
15. Also I will ordain enmity between you and the woman,
and between your seed and her seed:
it is he that will bruise your head
but you will bruise his heel.”
we’êbâh ’âshîyth bêynekhâ ûbêyn hâ’ishshâh
ûbêyn zareakhâ ûbêyn zare‘âh
hû’ yeshûphekhâ rô’sh
we’attâh teshûphennû ‘âqêb
16. To the woman he said,
“I will greatly increase your pain in pregnancy -
with hard labour you will bear children -
and towards your man will be your thirst,
but it is he who will rule over you.”
Ç ’el-hâ’ishshâh ’âmar
harebbâh ’arebbeh ‘itstsebôwnêkh wehêrônêkh
be‘etsebh têledîy bânîym
we’el-’îyshêkh teshûqâthêkh
wehû’ yimeshal-bâkh
17. Next, to Adam he said,
“Because you listened to the voice of your woman
and you ate from the tree about which I commanded you,
saying, ‘you must never eat from it’,
cursed is the ground by your curse.
With hard labour you will eat from it all the days of your life:
Ç ûle’âdâm ’âmar
kîy shâma‘ethâ leqôwl ’ishethekhâ
wattô’kal min-hâ‘êts ’asher tsiwwîythîykhâ
lê’môr lô’ tô’kal mimmennû
arûrâh hâ’adâmâh ba‘abûrekhâ
be‘itstsâbôwn tô’kelennâh kol yemêy hayyeykhâ
18. both thorns and thistles will sprout from it for you,
but you will eat the vegetation of the field.
weqôwts wedaredar tatsmîyah lâkh
we’âkaletâ ’eth-‘êseb hassâdeh
19. By the sweat of your face you will eat bread
until your return into the ground -
since from this you were taken -
because dust you are,
and to dust you will return.”
bezê‘ah ’apeykhâ tô’kal lechem
‘ad shûbekhâ ’el-hâ’adâmâh
kîy mimmennâh luqqâche
kîy-‘âphâr ’attâh
we’el-‘âphâr tâshûb
20. Then the man proclaimed that the name of his woman was Chawwah,
since it was she who would become the mother of all the living,
wayyiqrâ’ hâ’âdâm shêm ’ishtôw chawwâh
kîy hiw’ hâyethâh ’êm kol-chay
21. and Yahweh Elohim made for Adam and for his woman tunics of leather,
so he clothed them.
wayya‘as YHVH ’elôhîym le’âdâm ûle’ishtôw kâthenôth ‘ôwr
wayyalebishêm
22. Then Yahweh Elohim said,
“See, the man has become like one of us,
having knowledge of good and evil.
And now, lest he reach out his hand
and take also from the tree of Living and eat,
and so live indefinitely...”

hên hâ’âdâm hâyâh ke’achad mimmennû
lâda‘ath tôwb wârâ‘
we‘attâh pen-yishelach yâdôw
welâqach gam mê‘êts hachayyîym we’âkal
wâchay le‘ôlâm
23. So Yahweh Elohim put him out of the garden of Eden
to serve the ground out of which he had been taken.
wayyeshallechêhû YHVH ’elôhîym miggan-‘êden
la‘abôd ’eth-hâ’adâmâh ’asher luqqach mishshâm
24. Thus he cast out the man,
and he stationed before the garden of Eden the Kerubim
with a fiery sword that turned in every direction,
keeping watch over the way to the tree of Living.
wayegâresh ’eth-hâ’âdâm
wayyashekên miqqedem legan-‘êden ’eth-hakkerubîym
we’êth lahat hachereb hammithhapheketh
lishemôr ’eth-derek ‘êts hachayyîym
