1.
2.
3. Now, the inhabitants of Gibe‘on, they heard all that Yehoshua‘ had done to Yericho and to ‘Ay, weyôshebêy gibe‘ôwn shâme‘û ’êth ’asher ‘âsâh yehôwshua‘ lîyrîychôw welâ‘ây
4. and so they acted with deceipt, by going and preparing themselves as envoys. So they took worn-out sacking to their donkeys, and worn-out skins of wine, both ripped and tied up again, wayya‘asû gam-hêmmâh be‘ârmâh wayyêlekhû wayyitsetayyârû wayyiqechû saqqîym bâlîym lachamôwrêyhem wenô’dôwth yayin bâlîym ûmebuqqâ‘îym ûmetsôrârîym
5. and worn-out patched sandals on their feet, and worn-out clothing upon themselves, and all the bread of their provisions dried up and becoming mouldy. ûne‘âlôwth bâlôwth ûetullâ’ôwth beragelêyhem ûselâmôwth bâlôwth ‘alêyhem wekhôl lêchem tsêydâm yâbêsh hâyâh niqqudîym
6. Then they went to Yehoshua‘, to the encampment at the Gilgal, and they said to him and to the men of Yisra'el, “From a land far away we have come: now cut for us a covenant.” wayyêlekhû ’el-yehôwshua‘ ’el-hammachaneh haggilgâl wayyô’merû ’êlâyw we’el-’îysh yisrâ’êl mê’erets rechôwqâh bâ’nû we‘attâh kirethû-lânû berîyth
7. But the men of Yisra'el said to the Chiwiy, “Perhaps you are living close at hand: then how could we cut for you a covenant?” wayyô’merû ’îysh-yisrâ’êl ’el-hachiwwîy ’ûlay beqirebîy ’attâh yôwshêb we’êykh ’ekherôwth-lekhâ berîyth
8. Then they said to Yehoshua‘, “Your vassals let us be,” but Yehoshua‘ asked them, “Who are you, and from where have you come?” wayyô’merû ’el-yehôwshua‘ ‘abâdeykhâ ’anâchnû wayyô’mer ’alêyhem yehôwshua‘ mîy ’attem ûmê’ayin tâbô’û
9. So they said to him, “From a land very far away we came to be your vassals, drawn to the name of Yahweh your Elohim, for we heard his fame, and indeed all that he did in Mitsrayim, wayyô’merû ’êlâyw mê’erets rechôwqâh me’ôd bâ’û ‘abâdeykhâ leshêm YHVH ’elôheykhâ kîy-shâma‘nû shâme‘ôw we’êth kol-’asher ‘âsâh bemitsrâyim
10. and also all that he did to the pair of kings of the Emoriy who were on the far side of the Yorden - to Çiychon king of Cheshbon and to ‘Og king of the Bashan, who was in ‘Ashtaroth. we’êth kol-’asher ‘âsâh lishenêy malekhêy hâ’emôrîy ’asher be‘êber hayyordên leçîychôwn melekh cheshbôwn ûle‘ôwg melekh-habbâshân ’asher be‘ashtârôwth
11. So they said to us - our elders, and all those dwelling in our land - saying, ‘Take in your hand provisions for the road and go to them, saying to them, “Your vassals let us be: now cut for us a covenant.”’ wayyô’merû ’êlêynû zeqêynêynû wekhol-yôshebêy ’aretsênû lê’môr qechû beyedekhem tsêydâh laderekh ûlekhû liqerâ’thâm wa’amaretem ’alêhem ‘abedêykhem ’anachnû we‘attâh kirethû-lânû berîyth
12. This is our bread, warm when we provisioned ourselves from our houses on the day we set out to travel to you - and now see, it is dried up and becoming mouldy. zeh lachemênû châm hitstayyadenû ’ôthôw mibbâttêynû beyôwm tsê’thênû lâlekheth ’alêkhem we‘attâh hinneh yâbêsh wehâyâh niqqudîym
13. And here are the skins of wine we filled new - and see, they have split themselves open. And these are our garments and our sandals, worn out from the long, the very long way.” we’êlleh nô’dôwth hayyayin ’asher millê’nû chadâshîym wehinneh hithbâqqa‘û we’êlleh salmôwthêynû ûne‘âlêynû bâlû mêrôb hadderekh me’ôd
14. Then the men took some of the provisions - but of the mouth of Yahweh they did not enquire. wayyiqechû hâ’anâshîym mitstsêydâm we’eth-pîy YHVH lô’ shâ’âlû
15. Then Yehoshua‘ made peace for them, and he cut for them a covenant for their life, and the leaders of the assembly pledged agreement to them. wayya‘as lâhem yehôwshua‘ shalôwm wayyikherôth lâhem berîyth lechayyôwthâm wayyishshâbe‘û lâhem nesîy’êy hâ‘êdâh
16. But it so happened that at the end of three days after the time when they cut for them a covenant, that they heard that they were close by, that close at hand were their settlements. wayehîy miqetsêy shelôsheth yâmîym ’acharêy ’asher-korethû lâhem berîyth wayyishme‘û kîy-qerôbîym hêm ’êlâyw ûbeqirebôw hêm yôshebîym
17. So the children of Yisra'el set out, and they came to their cities on the third day - their cities being Gibe‘on and the Kephiyrah and Be'eroth and Qiryath Ye‘arim. wayyiçe‘û benê-yisrâ’êl wayyâbô’û ’el-‘ârêyhem bayyôwm hashshelîyshîy we‘ârêyhem gibe‘ôwn wehakkepîyrâh ûbe’êrôwth ûqiryath ye‘ârîym
18. But the children of Yisra'el did not attack them, for the leaders of the assembly had pledged to them by Yahweh Elohim of Yisra'el, and all the assembly grumbled against the leaders. welô’ kikkûm benêy yisrâ’êl kîy-nishbe‘û lâhem nesîy’êy hâ‘êdâh baYHWH ’elôhêy yisrâ’êl wayyillônû kol-hâ‘êdâh ‘al-hannesîy’îym
19. Then the whole leadership replied to all the assembly, “We pledged ourselves to them by Yahweh Elohim of Yisra'el, and now we are not able to strike at them. wayyô’merû kol-hannesîy’îym ’el-kol-hâ‘êdâh ’anachnû nishba‘enû lâhem baYHWH ’elôhêy yisrâ’êl we‘attâh lô’ nukal lineggôa‘ bâhem
20. This we will do to them - they shall live, so there shall be no wrath upon us on account of the agreement which we pledged to them,” zô’th na‘aseh lâhem wehachayêh ’ôwthâm welô’-yihyeh ‘âlêynû qetseph ‘al-hashshebû‘âh ’asher-nishbâ‘enû lâhem
21. and the leaders went on to say to them, “they shall live, but they shall be gatherers of wood and drawers of water for all the assembly.” Thus the leaders decided for them, wayyô’merû ’alêyhem hannesîy’îym yicheyû wayyiheyû chôtebê ‘êtsîym wesô’abêy-mayim lekhol-hâ‘êdâh ka’aser dibberû lâhem hannesîy’îym
22. and Yehoshua‘ proclaimed to them. Then he spoke with them saying, “Why did you deceive us, saying, ‘Far distant are we from you, very far’, when in fact close to us are your settlements? wayyiqerâ’ lâhem yehôwshua‘ wayedabbêr ’alêyhem lê’môr lâmmâh rimmîythem ’ôthânû lê’mô rechôwqîym ’anachnû mikkem meô’d we’attem beqirebênû yôshebîym
23. So now cursed are you, and never shall you be cut away from us as a vassal: and you are gatherers of wood and drawers of water for the house of Elohim.” we‘attâh ’arûrîym ’attem welô’-yikkârêth mikkem ‘ebed wechôtebêy ‘êtsîym weshô’abêy mayim lebêyth ’elôhây
24. But they answered Yehoshua‘ saying, “Because it was most plainly clear to your vassals the way that Yahweh your Elohim commanded Mosheh his servant, to give to you the whole land, and to annihilate all those living in the land before your face, and we were greatly afraid to our very souls at your approach - and so we did this thing. wayya‘anû ’eth-yehôwshua‘ wayyô’merû kîy huggêd huggêd la‘abâdeykhâ ’êth ’asher tsiwwâh YHVH ’elôheykhâ ’eth-môsheh ‘abedôw lâthôth lâkhem ’eth-kol-hâ’ârets ûlehashemîyd ’eth-kol-yôshebêy hâ’ârets mippenêykhem wannîyrâh me’ôd lenaphshôthêynû mippenêykhem wanna‘asêh ’eth-haddâbâr hazzeh
25. And now see us in your hand - whatever seems good and whatever seems right in your eyes to do to us, do it.” we‘attâh hinenû beyâdekhâ kattôwb wekayyâshâr be‘êyneykhâ la‘asôwth lânû ‘asêh
26. So he did this to them, and he rescued them from the hand of the children of Yisra'el, so that they did not slaughter them, wayya‘as lâhem kên wayyatstsêl ’ôwthâm miyyâd benêy-yisrâ’êl welô’ harâgûm
27. and Yehoshua‘ made them in that day to be gatherers of wood and drawers of water for the assembly, and for the altar of Yahweh up until this day, at the place which he would choose. wayyittenêm yehôwshua‘ bayyôwm hahû’ chôtebêy ‘êtsîym weshô’abêy mayim lâ‘êdâh ûlemizbach YHVH ‘ad-hayyôwm hazzeh ’el-hammâqôwm ’asher yibechâr
