Psalm 42

1. For the choir director, a song of wisdom, for the sons of Qorach. lamnatstsêach masekîyl libenêy-qôrach
2. Like the stag pressing in
among the courses of water,
so my soul presses in
towards you, O God.
ke’ayyâl ta‘arôg
‘al-’aphîyqêy-mâyim
kên napheshîy ta‘arôg
’êleykhâ ’elôhîym
3. Thirsty is my soul for God -
for El of life -
when shall I go
and see the face of God?
tsâme’âh napheshîy lê’lôhîym
le’êl chây
mâthay ’âbô’
we’êrâ’eh penêy ’elôhîym
4. This is my lot: my tears are bread
by day and night
in their speech to me each day,
“Where is your God?”
hâyethâh-lîy dime‘âthîy lechem
yôwmâm wâlâylâh
be’emôr ’êlay kol-hayyôwm
’ayyêh ’elôheykhâ
5. This I remember and pour out
within my soul,
for I used to pass among the throng, would lead
up to the house of God
with a sound of praise-filled thanks,
the tumult of the festal.
’êlleh ’ezkerâh we’eshpekhâh
‘âlay napheshîy
kîy ’e‘ebôr baççâkh ’eddaddêm
‘ad-bêyth ’elôhîym
beqôwl-rinnâh wethôwdâh
hâmôwm chôwgêg
6. Why then despair, my soul,
and twist in turmoil within me?
Keep waiting for God, for yet will I thank him
for his liberating face.

wattehemîy ‘âlây
hôwchilîy lê’lôhîym kîy-‘ôwd ’ôwdennû
yeshû‘ôwth pânâyw
7. O God of mine, within my soul despairs:
therefore I will remember you from the land of Yorden
and Chermon`s peaks, from Mount Mits‘ar
elôhay ‘âlay napheshîy tishetôchâch
‘al-kên ’ezekârekhâ mê’erets yardên
wechermôwnîym mêhar mits‘âr
8. Deep unto deep calls out
to the sound of your tornados,
all your heaped-up waves
within me have passed over.
tehôwm-’el-tehôwm qôwrê’
leqôwl tsinnôreykhâ
kol-mishebâreykhâ wegalleykhâ
‘âlay ‘âbârû
9. By day commands Yahweh his loving kindness
and by night his song beside me.
A prayer to El of my life
yôwmâm yetsawweh YHWH chaçedôw
ûballaylâh shîrrâh ‘immîy
tephillâh le’êl chayyây
10. which says to El my pinnacle
“What? Have you forgotten me?
That mourning should I go
in the oppression of the enemy,
’ôwmerâh le’êl çale‘îy
lâmâh shekhachetânîy
lâmmâh-qôdêr ’êlêkh
belachats ’ôwyêb
11. in the shattering of my bones,
in the taunts of my adversaries
with their speech to me each day,
‘Where is your God?’”

be’âmerâm ’êlay kol-hayyôwm
’ayyêh ’elôheykhâ
12. Why then despair, my soul?
